Once again, you just sucked me in with your narrative. I loved those books so much---when traveling thru Minnesota last year I insisted we stop at one of the several Laura Ingalls Wilder museums that was on our route.

It's so much easier to recognize bigotry and the roots of bigotry when we observe it in someone else. These are wonderful lessons that someday she'll use as a compass in her own life. Every day, every year, every generation we pull back the layers and see how we can be so much more.

Its also funny how when we first read/ encounter these books as children (back in the day), we often thought nothing of it (even if we didn't share those views). I'm an 80s child and now whenever I watch Sixteen Candles, the protrayal of Asians ruins the movie for me.

On the Banks of Plum Creek was also my favorite Little House book.

I second the Peanut Butter suggestion. My mom used that...a lot.

It's funny to see kids' reactions when they hear about how things used to be before tv and video games. I love taking them to the Stuhr Museum. They're learning to appreciate things a lot more as they learn more about what life was like without modern conveniences.

Bigotry still shocks me. A great-uncle married a sweet lady who was born and raised in Montgomery, AL. She is the sweetest, kindest lady, and I know my jaw drops everytime a racist comment comes out of her mouth. My husband has some relatives who are also a little racist, so everytime they say something about other races, I have to explain to the boys how that kind of talk is not acceptable, and that these relatives just don't know any better.
