One Day It Will Disgust Her

“What do you want to do about dinner?” asked PC.

“Nothing. I don’t want to think about it.  I’m hungry but I just don’t feel like cooking.”

“I don’t either,” he said.  “I could go get something…”

“No, that’s a waste.  We must have something in the freezer.”

PC brightened up.  “Hey! I know!”  He went to the freezer and pulled out a large box of corn dogs.  “Rabbit and I had these yesterday but they weren’t bad.  How about it?”

I shrugged.  “That’s fine.”

Half an hour later we sat down to eat.  Rabbit was dawdling and worked on gnawing the crunchy coating from the stick before pulling the corn dog off to peel the coating away and dis-assemble it on her plate.  PC and I visited and ate, both of us working on a second corn dog before Rabbit had finished her first.

“Mommy?” asked Rabbit as I put the stick from the corn dog down on my plate.

“Yes?”

“Is that your second one?”

I paused.  “Yes.”

Silence.  Rabbit’s eyes were wide.

“Wow,” she whispered.  “You already ate two of them.”

I gave her a hard stare and then rolled my eyes over to PC, who was strangling into his paper napkin to keep from laughing out loud.

“Yes Rabbit,” I said to her while staring at my husband, who continued laughing.  “I’ve eaten two.”

PC coughed and grinned.  “Hey,” he said, “She’s just impressed!”

Some nights, these blog posts just write themselves.
